Westman Islands (Part 2)
Note:This is part one of a two part series, make sure to read them from the beginning of part one.
There might have been some foreshadowing that all was not right. Viking omens and whatnot. For one, we ended up having to leave the rental car behind. Even showing up 3 hours early to an empty ferry station we ended up being 11th on the wait list.
As you might expect of the descendants of Viking raiders and pillagers, customer service is merely a theory here. The girl booking tickets finally acknowledged me.
"I would like to get ferry tickets please." I said, only to be returned with a stare.
"Uh, a ferry ticket to that island. The Westman islands."
No response incoming.
"Okay, a ferry ticket for 4 people and a car to those islands you can see out the window."
I began to describe that it was a red car, but seeing that I wasn't going to go away and worse would just keep talking awkwardly she sighed, "I will check."
What followed was an in depth typing on her computer "Oh, the ferry is booked, I will put you on the wait list."
Being a bit non confrontational I didn't ask how she needed to check the computer when there were only 4 ferries per day, all going to the same place.
I wrote my name on a post-it note for her.
"I will call out your name. If I can." She amended darkly, studying my name critically. I felt a little more put out by this than I should have, but I thought Shane would be easy for someone who can say eyjafjallajökull without stumbling.
As the time counted down she assured us we just needed to wait. There was a lot of back and forth as cars started showing up and driving directly on to the ship.
After we were within the last call 5 minute absolute deadline, we grabbed our bags and purchased walk on tickets, bridging through jut before they shut the hatch.
The ferry did have nice plush couches which was nice because we did a lot of sitting before the ferry ever left. We joked that they were worriedly looking for the poor lost Americans,
Eventually we alighted for the wild Westman Islands where our troubles would be blown away.
Except you know that didn't happen.
